I wanted someone who was experimenting with computer controlled LEDs as an art form to feel part of the community as well--which is why I started referring to it as the "Innovation Community". Anyone who was doing something new and cutting edge should feel connected to each other--whether or not they are building a venture backed startup.

Video pitching. I see an uptick in pitching via pre-recorded video. We used Loom to pre-record our pitch and share it with potential investors. It’s a great way to personalize a pitch deck and share it with interested parties. Investors and consumers prefer businesses that prioritize ecological impact and sustainability.

I grew up here, went to school here, and have worked hard over the last 5+ years to help build up the NYC innovation community. It might take you six months to get to know an investor well, so don’t expect a check on the first pitch. It’s also one that you can work around by actually getting to know people over time.
