Five years ago, I started nextNY with the idea that it would be participant driven--that the community would take an active role in managing itself. I think that we've done a decent job with that, and we have a number of examples of individuals who have used it as a leadership platform, but it isn't as much of a leader factory as I had hoped.

My two friends and I started Tejiendo Sonrisas, a Peruvian nonprofit organization, on March 1, 2011. We saw very clearly that there are problems in our community and we saw it was important that somebody act on them. The biggest problem in my community and in my country is indifference to cases of violence and trafficking.
