As a teenager, I trained obsessively. After a full day of school I would go straight to practice, train for four hours, go home and fall asleep with my head on my laptop. But I loved it. That intense level of training led to me winning two gold medals in the national championships of Kwon Jae-Hwa Traditional Taekwondo in Germany. Thinking back on it, the way I trained — the discipline and the plateaus — taught me a lot about the way business works.

This post has been adapted from a thread from a16z Partner Justine Moore on X. Follow Justine on X for more analysis and observations. 2023 was a breakout year for AI video. At the start of the year, no public text-to-video models existed. Just 12 months later, dozens of video generation products are in active use, with millions of users worldwide creating short clips from text or image prompts.
A healthy ego can be an entrepreneur’s best friend. But when vanity intrudes, all the puzzle pieces start to come apart. The terms “ego” and “vanity” tend to be misunderstood. The ego represents your sense of self. The ego is concerned about what you think of you. (That’s not a typo.) Vanity brings the outside world into the mix. When you ask, “What do other people think of me?

Startups are often at the forefront of innovation, developing new technologies, products, and services that disrupt traditional industries and bring fresh ideas and approaches that drive technological advancements. In that regard, startups often rely heavily on their ideas, and the unauthorized replication of those ideas may result in a loss of control over the unique aspects of a startup’s offerings.

Last year, I argued every company would need an AI strategy because AI would infuse most products. But, I missed an important concept in the post. Talent. In the last year, AI experience has become a status symbol on a resume & a path to materially higher salaries. I’ve spoken to many executives seeking their next role. “I’m looking for a role in an AI company” is a refrain in every conversation.

At KN+S we get asked at least once a week by a start-up CEO whether they need a formal valuation or not when they are issuing stock or options. Many angel investors, V.C.s and Boards often suggest to young CEO's not to waste the money and that the risk of any exposure is low. While this maybe true, companies need to understand that potential exposure down the road and the additional work it may cause.

Readers of this blog and/or my book know that I am pro regulation as a way of getting the best out of technological progress. One topic I have covered repeatedly over the years is the need to get past the app store lock-in. The European Digital Markets Act was supposed to accomplish this but Apple gave a middle finger by figuring out a way to comply with the letter of the law while going against its spirit.

Lots of venture capital transitions underway. Here’s what I predicted in Allocate’s 2024 Outlook Last week Pitchbook asked me (and others) for background on how a VC actually gets fired (or more often ‘transitioned’) Darwin moves slowly in venture, but these investor changes can be very disruptive to the founders who were backed by the exiting partner.

There aren’t a ton of people in the world who can say they founded a billion dollar company. There are far fewer that can say they did it twice. YC Group Partner Tom Blomfield is one of them. Rarer yet is just how real Tom is about all of it. Listening to his stories from the early days of GoCardless and Monzo feels like riding a roller coaster — because that’s what building a company is.
