The local tech community is figuring this out, not surprisingly, way before the academic institutions are—and where it is being discovered by academia, it’s being done on a one-off basis by educational revolutionaries in the innovation space who aren’t stopping to ask their schools for permission or to change curricula.

Several people have been asking me to weigh in publicly on the “20 under 20″ initiative announced by Peter Thiel in which he will award up to $100,000 to 20 people under the age of 20 who agree immediately to pursue entrepreneurship (the implication of which is that they’d drop out of university to do so). My 2 cents: 1.
This is going to be BIG.

They don't have great marketing channels to those clubs and the faculty don't advocate for participation as part of your education. Entrepreneurship education needs hard skills training. They don't have to be big, contrived incubators--just a few couches and maybe a plug or two--and open wifi. Kick the faculty out.

The first two years of the program focused on education & mentorship. This education will continue. But wait, does that make Launchpad LA an incubator now? We sort of think of ourselves as an “accelerator” who provides strong education & mentorship. So What is Different for Class Three?

There are incubators to help you out on the financing side, too. The success of YCombinator and Techstars has spawned countless new incubators. New York will feature five this summer alone--Techstars, DreamIt, Startl and the NYC Seed/EDC Media and Finance incubators.
